Our copy of Scriptores Historiae Augustae features initial letters (large letters at the beginning of sections of text) that were added by hand after the book’s printing in a separate workshop. This was a common practice at the time, meant to emulate the appearance of earlier manuscript books and add color and distinction to the printed page. The spaces for these letters were left blank during printing, although there were often guide letters printed that were intended to be painted over. There is one illuminated initial painted in gold at the book’s opening, and throughout the book other capitals are supplied in blue and red.
